Vought OS2U Kingfisher, Airfix 1/72

Model, text and images by Luca Cinacchio

I love the small, old Airfix kits... they are quick to build, cheap, and they offer a wide range of unusual subjects. So when i found a good bargain on Ebay, o bought this Kingfisher.
The kit is old, but doesn't have too many issues, with one relevant excpetion: the cockpit. No way... it is just wrong, it doesn't fit at all. I corrected with some putty (and lot of patient sandjob) the are where the canoy touch the fuseleage, but no way to correct the joining in between the various frames (and i didn't want to buy some aftermarket parts costing the double of the kit ! ).

I would not indulge much on the assembling on the kit, where by the way i made a big mistake that i fixed only at the last moment, gluing one of the 2 floats reversed! In the images you see the mix of color that i used to paint it. Because by now i feel comfident with the hairspray technique, i used it to produce as usually (for me) and extra worn plane, with many chippings.

For the base i used an old piec of wood from the junk; on its top i glued some styrofoam, and with the Cellulose Thinner i "digged" it, to create the "holes" for the plane.
Then i roughly painted it, just to see the effects. I enveloped the assembled model with some kitchen plastic, placed it in position, prepared a mix of plaster, white glue and water, and pourred it on the base that i had surounded with masking tape. When the plaster was dry, i removed the model, painted the base, and then used some Vallejo Water applied with a brush. Finally i drybrushed everything with some white.
