German U-Boat Captain, by Alpine Miniatures 1/16

Models, text and images by Benjamin Wong

Being a huge fan of the WW2 movie "Das Boot", my excitment could not be contained when Alpine decided to release a 1/16 (120mm) scale figure of a German U-Boat Captain. As with all Alpine's casts, the figure was clean and was without any moulding lines. Removal of the casting plugs was effortless and the figure was quickly assembled.

I used a combination of magnets for the arms and head while the legs were pinned in place. Alpine figures come with 2 heads so i would recommend using a magnet if you intend to do a head swap subsequently.

As a captain is never far from his boat, I mounted the figure on a base built with plastic card. Drawing on some references and with a touch of imagination, the captain was placed on an exposed section of the U-Boat when a deck panel was removed for maintenance after a patrol.

The figure was painted with Jo Sonja and Lifecolour acrylics.
